My service learning focused on the learners. I chose to do an English and Mathematics program designed to enhance the learner’s potential to grow within these two subjects. The learners were eager to learn and be a part of the program that I have designed. When I planned the program I took into account the learners feelings towards Mathematics and English. The learners in my class were nervous and scared in the initial stages of the program. As we went through the program features the learners started to enjoy the learning environment and content covered. My aim for the program was for the learners to grow and to create confidence for themselves to tackle any content and concepts covered in English and Mathematics. The program allowed the learners the freedom to answer freely with creative and innovative answers.

The program lasted for 3 weeks which had 2 days of extra classes in the week. I had to get the educators on board with the program going through all the correct channels. I decided to create an action plan for my program which involves extra classes. I asked first asked my class what did they thought about the extra classes. The learners were excited and keen on having extra classes for Mathematics and English. The parents agreed on the extra classes for their learners. The parents were required to sign an extra class acceptance letter that gave me and the school permission to do the extra classes. The extra classes were done on Mondays and Wednesdays. The learners had to sign a class register. The number of learners that had attended in the beginning of extra classes was low as the learners shared their experiences of the extra classes the numbers of attended started picking up. The extra class activities consisted of content covering the examinations. The extra class lessons were designed to unlock the learners’ potential and focus on areas in Mathematics and English that the learners may not understand.

Overall the service learning is has been fairly successful. The learners understood the content in their own way. I used teaching methods and strategies which focus on the learners understanding interpretation which allowed the learners to design their own knowledge and set their own standard of learning.
